In\u00a02019\u00a0Netflix\u00a0screened\u00a0the\u00a0final\u00a0episode\u00a0of\u00a0Orange\u00a0Is\u00a0the\u00a0New\u00a0Black<\/em>,\u00a0the\u00a0American\u00a0TV\u00a0show about\u00a0a\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0prison\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0American\u00a0town\u00a0Litchfield,\u00a0which\u00a0also\u00a0quickly\u00a0became\u00a0a feminist\u00a0hit.\u00a0What\u00a0is\u00a0so\u00a0fascinating\u00a0about\u00a0women\u2019s\u00a0prison\u00a0films\u00a0and\u00a0why\u00a0do\u00a0they\u00a0serve\u00a0so\u00a0well as\u00a0feminist\u00a0storytelling?\u00a0Our\u00a0\u201cFocus\u00a0Feminist\u00a0Heritage<\/em>\u201d\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0Berlin\u00a0Feminist\u00a0Film\u00a0Week\u00a02020 takes\u00a0us\u00a0right\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a01997\u00a0and\u00a0acknowledges\u00a0Katja\u00a0von\u00a0Garnier\u2019s\u00a0film\u00a0Bandits\u00a0<\/em>as\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0part of\u00a0feminist\u00a0herstory and pop culture. We’re very excited to announce a special guest: Bandits<\/em>-actor Jasmin Tabatabai will join us for a conversation with American studies scholar Dr. Maria Sulimma, who will introduce the film with a short talk on women’s prison films and pop culture.<\/p>\n

The Film<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBaby,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0forget\u00a0to\u00a0catch\u00a0me\u201d\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the\u00a0Andreases,\u00a0Tobiases\u00a0and\u00a0Christians\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0German\u00a0film critics\u00a0all\u00a0agreed:\u00a0Katja\u00a0von\u00a0Garnier\u2019s\u00a0road\u00a0movie\u00a0was\u00a0rubbish,\u00a0even\u00a0embarrassing,\u00a0what\u00a0was she\u00a0thinking?\u00a0The\u00a0audience\u00a0felt\u00a0differently,\u00a0especially\u00a0amongst\u00a0young\u00a0women\u00a0and\u00a0girls,\u00a0the film\u00a0was\u00a0an\u00a0instant\u00a0hit\u00a0and\u00a0Bandits\u00a0turned\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0feminist\u00a0cult\u00a0film.<\/p>\n

Emma,\u00a0Luna,\u00a0Angel\u00a0and\u00a0Marie\u00a0start\u00a0a\u00a0rock\u00a0band\u00a0while\u00a0in\u00a0prison\u00a0and\u00a0escape\u00a0during\u00a0a performance\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0police\u00a0ball.\u00a0Once\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0run,\u00a0they\u00a0take\u00a0an\u00a0attractive\u00a0male\u00a0hostage\u00a0and play\u00a0concerts\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0way.\u00a0Both\u00a0the\u00a0fictional\u00a0band\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0film\u00a0itself\u00a0became\u00a0subjects\u00a0of fan\u2019s\u00a0affections.<\/p>\n

Jasmin Tabatabai<\/strong> is a German-iranian actor. After studying drama at the arts college “Hochschule f\u00fcr Musik und Kunst” in Stuttgart, she was discovered in 1992 playing the main role in the Swiss film Kinder der Landstrasse<\/em> (Children of the open road). Tabatabai has since been a household name in the German film industry, acted in over 40 films and is known for Vier Minuten<\/em>,\u00a0Bandits<\/em>, Der Baader Meinhof Komplex<\/em> and Gripsholm<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Dr. Maria\u00a0Sulimma<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0an\u00a0American\u00a0Studies\u00a0scholar\u00a0working\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0intersecting\u00a0areas\u00a0of\u00a0cultural studies,\u00a0gender\u00a0studies,\u00a0feminist\u00a0media\u00a0studies,\u00a0and\u00a0urban\u00a0studies.\u00a0Based\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0University Duisburg-Essen,\u00a0she\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0Postdoctoral\u00a0Researcher\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Research\u00a0Group\u00a0\u201cScripts\u00a0for Postindustrial\u00a0Urban\u00a0Futures:\u00a0American\u00a0Models,\u00a0Transatlantic\u00a0Interventions.\u201d\u00a0Her\u00a0most\u00a0recent publication\u00a0is\u00a0the\u00a0monograph\u00a0Gender\u00a0and\u00a0Seriality:\u00a0Practices\u00a0and\u00a0Politics\u00a0of\u00a0Contemporary\u00a0US Television\u00a0which\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0out\u00a0with\u00a0Edinburgh\u00a0University\u00a0Press\u00a0in\u00a02020.<\/p>\n
