Filling blank spaces, producing counter-narratives
It is no more a surprise that film (and especially film business) reproduces and affirms gender discrimination and stereotypes. It happens under various combinable forms: passivity, silence, invisibility, objectification.
But what about the counter-narratives of women* filmmakers whose stories and voices are important for the shaping of our present and a possible future?
In this workshop we want to have a look at the innumerable empty spaces in the history of film regarding the role of women*. Together we want to exchange about continuities of stereotypes and representations of women* in film and the film business.
We first examine and discuss facts and quotes regarding gender and film. Those quotes from different perspectives allow us to connect to them with our own experiences, thoughts and ideas.
Following, we watch and discuss film extracts that enforce a “female gaze”: Which perspectives and narratives become visible? How do these voices echo to the audience and their protagonists and/or topics? How do these other narratives and perspectives break out of the normative?
