Event Information
Carmen is a gitana teenager living in the outskirts of Madrid. She is destined to live a life that is repeated generation after generation: getting married and raising as many children as possible. But one day she meets Lola, another Gitana who dreams about going to university, draws bird graffiti and likes girls. Carmen quickly develops a complicity with Lola and they discover a new world that she hasn’t seen before.
The cast of Carmen and Lola consists mainly of non-professional actors from the Spanish Gitano community, which gives the film an authentic feel. Throughout a challenging casting process extended over a 6 month period, the mainly female production team interviewed over 1.000 people until they found Carmen and Lola. Only one character in the film is played by a professional actor, the rest of the 150 people in the film had no prior experience in front of the camera.
